Bombardier; Navigation Brewery New Dawn Pale; 1 changing beer H As its name implies, this is an old converted grain barge that is berthed in the town centre near all bus routes. It has a slight list to starboard, but do not worry – it has had it for over twenty years. Afternoon trade is more foodoriented, whilst evenings have more of a rock feel when the Jukebox is turned on. There is a quiz on Monday nights with a free supper. An outdoor seating area is to the front.

Batemans XXXB; Timothy Taylor Landlord; house beer (by Pheasantry); 3 changing beers (sourced regionally; often Horncastle Ales, Rudgate, Springhead) H Set in the picturesque Lincolnshire Wolds and a popular stopping place for walkers and cyclists, the pub’s name originates from the counting of sheep passing through a nearby clicking gate. Renowned for its home-cooked food served in the bar and conservatory, it offers a choice of drinks, including six real ales and a traditional cider. The house beer is Terry’s Tipple. There is pool, darts and a Jukebox. Monday is quiz night. A covered, unheated area is provided for smokers.

Sharp’s Doom Bar; 3 changing beers (sourced nationally) H Overlooking the historic but now defunct Louth Navigation canal, this is a convenient watering hole for lovers of outdoor pursuits. Dogs are welcome in the public bar – the landlord keeps a jar of dog biscuits on the bar for them! There is a pleasant garden at the rear, while at the front is a patio overlooking the canal. Traditional Sunday lunches are served. Guest beers are available in summer months.

Sharp’s Doom Bar; house beer (by Batemans); 1 changing beer H After being closed for a while this village pub was refurbished and reopened by motorbike racer Guy Martin. It is adorned with racing memorabilia and also items from the 166 Squadron inside. It is a family-run pub with Guy’s sister Sally managing operations. Although it is mainly food-oriented it has three handpumps, and drinkers are given as warm a welcome as diners. The house beer was developed by collaboration between Guy Martin and Batemans Brewery.

2 changing beers H A specialist bottle shop with a pop-up bar at weekends, two cask ales are offered each weekend with the bar attracting a mixed crowd of those seeking something different. The drinking area is outdoors so wear a jumper and coat in cold weather. Background music is played, and events where food and beer are paired can be busy, but a seat is usually found for passers by.

Batemans XXXB; Draught Bass; 6 changing beers (sourced regionally; often Horncastle Ales) H A large railway bar situated on Cleethorpes station, this popular local has a main bar with a smaller real alethemed back room overlooking the station platform. The walls are adorned with local railway memorabilia, and there is outside seating at the front for warmer weather. Known for its home-cooked meals, live music is a feature most weekends and the pub also has a yearly music festival.

Hancocks HB; Rudgate Ruby Mild; Sharp’s Atlantic, Sea Fury; 2 changing beers (sourced nationally) H A local CAMRA award-winning pub, set on the railway station forecourt itself so very handy for the railway station. Quality ales are served in a convivial atmosphere. A excellent choice of real ales is always available, usually including one dark beer. There is also a range of ciders. Known locally as Under the Clock, this small one-roomed bar has become a regular feature in this Guide.

Oakham Citra; Tetley Bitter; Timothy Taylor Landlord; 4 changing beers (sourced regionally) H A popular traditionally-styled pub, consisting of three rooms all accessible from the front bar. The cosy snug can be found at the rear. All bars and toilets are on the ground floor. The public bar shows sports matches on the TV, and cards and dominoes are available to play. Wellbehaved children and dogs are made welcome in this old coaching house.

Old Mill Traditional Bitter; 3 changing beers H Close to both bus and train station, and recently refurbished, this pub tends to be a favourite with local and away football supporters. It has four handpumps and sells a selection of beers. The pub used to be an Old Mill pub and generally still serves one Old Mill beer. The pub is one single long room with a pool table and dartboard at the end. A television shows live sporting events.

3 changing beers (sourced regionally; often Bradfield, Theakston, Timothy Taylor) H Originally a hotel, built in 1848 for the Great Grimsby and Sheffield Junction Railway, this pub has a good community spirit. Live bands are featured once a month on Saturday and this together with karaoke, theme nights and traditional pub games make for a lively environment. Three handpumps are available and feature changing beers from regional brewers. Dogs are welcome. There is one large room with access to the bar and a smaller area for pool and bar games.

Willy’s Original; 2 changing beers (sourced nationally) H A seafront bar with views over the Humber estuary to the Yorkshire coast. There is a microbrewery on the site in which Willy’s Original bitter is brewed. The pub mainly operates from a downstairs bar; an upstairs bar is used for functions. Limited outdoor seating is available. Good quality locally sourced home-made food is served. A diverse clientele sees a gentler quieter crowd of an afternoon, with DJ’s at weekends.

Greene King Abbot; Ruddles Best Bitter; Sharp’s Doom Bar; 12 changing beers (sourced regionally) H Large open-plan pub serving 12 real ales from both national brands and more local ales from the Lincolnshire area. Like many in the Wetherspoon chain it can be very busy. After a troubled past where it was under threat of demolition, the building has been restored and is once again a grand hotel and a thriving pub, next door to Grimsby Town railway station.
